The first step in designing your own unique custom layup is deciding upon the thickness. There are four (4) available thicknesses: 1, 1-1/2, 2, and 2-1/2 inches. A 1 inch layup will include 17 layers, a 1-1/2 inch layup - 27 layers, a 2 inch layup - 35 layers and a 2-1/2 inch layup - 43 layers.
The next step is deciding on the color for each layer. Choose the color of the layers from the following chart1, and note the Letter designation (Color Code) for that color.
| A | B | C | D | E |
| F | G | H | I | J |
| K | L | M | N | 0 |
| P | Q |
Next, write out the Color Codes for the layers you have chosen, in the order in which you want them to appear in the layup. For example, ABCDE will look like this:
The resulting list of Color Codes defines the layer structure (or Order Style) of your layup. So, for example, ABCDEABCDEABCDEAB would be the Order Style you would specify when ordering a 1 inch thick layup in which the five colors listed above are repeating.
NOTE 1: Although Rutland Plywood Corporation uses the finest materials and process controls, natural variations in the properties of wood (such as density, grain, etc.) cause dyes to be absorbed differently, even along the same piece of wood. As a result, some variation of the apparent color are unavoidable. Typical color variations are shown below.
